In wine, a pretty good rule of thumb is that wherever you find great Pinot Noir, you’ll find great Chardonnay too.

So as the winemaker behind one of our best-selling reds, the Stepp Pinot Noir, it’s no surprise that Gerd can make a mean Chardonnay.

Chardonnay was finally allowed to be made in Germany just 20 years ago, and this wine comes from one of the first vineyards planted at the time.

The vineyard is planted on mostly limestone soils, in the warm and hilly Pfalz region not far from Alsace.

Gerd uses the same magic formula that helps make his Pinot Noir taste so good - he buys oak barrels from a friend who makes Grand Cru Burgundy - and ages the Chardonnay in them for 10 months.

You end up with a rich and refined Chardonnay… a dead ringer for Côtes de Beaune Blanc or Côte Chalonnaise.

And the price is an absolute snip for the quality. Gerd’s done it again!

Gerd grew up in a sleepy German village called Bad Durkheim, where his parents and grandparents were farmers and grapegrowers.

You might not be surprised to learn Gerd is now a winemaker in Bad Durkheim, but made damn sure he experienced the world before settling back here.

Not our cup of tea

nose: a bit of a reductive wine, starts with some coffee, sesame and green apple
palate: rather light and the aromas we found were more suitable for a sweet Riesling Kabinett.
Not our style.
