Pomerol is on the right bank of Bordeaux, beside the much more famous Saint-Émilion.

It’s seven times smaller and doesn’t have the beautiful village of its more renowned neighbour, so it flies a little under the radar. But it’s still home to one of the best and most expensive wines in the world (Pétrus).

The l'Eclat de Valois Pomerol is winemaker Frédéric’s top Pomerol wine. It comes from old vines planted by his grandfather, 60 years ago.

These vines produce enough grapes to make 35 barrels of wine, which Frédéric puts into his finest French oak.

In the January to March following vintage, he tastes every barrel carefully, and ends up using just the very best 10-12 barrels that he deems good enough for this wine.

It’s a blend of 82% Cabernet Franc and 18% Merlot - it’s a velvety, rich red with a lovely woody and aromatic nose. On the palate it’s structured, dark and elegant, with lots of complexity and great length.

This is a great chance to try one of France’s best appellations at an unusually sensible price.

I almost don't want to draw attention to this wine

But i just have to. Hard to believe the 2018 is drinking so well. Those with more self control than I will enjoy this immensely as it ages. Dark fruit, rich, warm and welcoming. I could wax on about the length of the wine and the wee grip of the tannins at the very end. But you'd be better finding out for yourself. After I've reordered mind...

Fantastic review, thank you Susan!
