And I couldn't be happier to pass on this benefit to you. - [Schwaderer Casablanca Pinot Noir 2019](https://winespark.co.uk/products/schwaderer-wines-pinot-noir-2019): Pinot Noir grows well in a select few locations in the world, and the Casablanca Valley in Chile is right up there on this list. Casablanca lies between Santiago inland and Valparaiso on the coast. Between its volcanic soils and cooling ocean breezes, it’s Pinot Noir growing heaven. The grapes for this wine come from a well-kept vineyard on the ocean side of the valley, and every afternoon an ocean breeze blows through, which lowers the temperature by 5 degrees. This is just what Pinot grapes love - a wide variation in temperature and long growing season. And the vines grow on poor soils on the slopes, which means they give pretty low yields by Chilean standards (8-9 tons per hectare). So you get lovely concentrated Pinot flavours in the grapes. Connie has been buying these grapes for 20 years, so she knows exactly what to do with them in the winery. Everything is handled gently and slowly, and then the wine is aged in 3rd-4th use French oak for 15 months. You land up with a wine that’s intense, spicy, a touch creamy, and full of red fruits - exactly what good Pinot should taste like (IMHO). And because it’s made in Chile and not France - this quality is yours for an absolute snip. - [Schwaderer Maipo Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/schwaderer-wines-cabernet-sauvignon-2018): When God created Cabernet Sauvignon, He created Maipo at the same time. Maipo has everything that Cabernet needs to grow and make world-class wines: 300 days of sunshine - and very little rain or humidity - which gives dreamy growing conditions A blend of ancient river bed and volcanic soils - which gives the grapes extra complexity And warm days and cold nights, which extends the growing season so Cabernet gets the time it needs to ripen to perfection. One sniff of this wine and you’ll see what I’m talking about. The intensity and complexity on the nose is classic Cab - cassis, mint, leather, chocolate. Connie sources the grapes from a 30 year-old vineyard in the foothills of the Andes. The vineyard owners, a well-known Chilean family, make an iconic wine from the same site that costs over $100. The wine is elegant and structured, with ripe dark fruit and herbs on the palate. And just a touch of dryness on the finish, that has it begging for good food.As for the label? This is Connie and her sister Mariane having a bit of fun. Mariane works with local artists on the labels, and they change subtly each year. This is high quality Cabernet with a Schwaderer twist. Give it a go. - [Casa Bauzá Atrevido 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/casa-bauza-atrevido-2018): In Chile, most wineries make a flagship ‘Ensamblaje’ wine, which is a blend of different red grapes. For the Atrevido, winemaker Natalia Poblete takes the absolute best expression of each variety, from the best tanks and barrels, and blends them together to make the ultimate red wine. The blend changes slightly each year depending on what tastes best. Natalia took a full month to decide on the 2018, and she finally settled on: 28% Cabernet Sauvignon 21% Syrah 21% Petit Verdot 16% Carmenere 11% Carignan 3% Cabernet Franc Natalia used to be assistant winemaker at Santa Rita, where she travelled all over Chile making huge blends. On her travels she discovered certain vineyards that really stood out versus others. So when she took over as head winemaker at Casa Bauzá in 2014, she knew exactly which growers to work with for their Ensamblaje wine. And wines like this won her Chile’s Young Winemaker of the Year in 2018 - confirming her as one of the country’s most exciting emerging talents. If you like the bright, ripe fruit of a new-world red, along with the power and concentration of southern France or Italy, you’ll love this. - [Baldassari Russian River Pinot Noir 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/baldassari-russian-river-pinot-noir-2018): Due to extremely limited supply, there's a limit of 3 bottles per customer on this wine. Russian River in Sonoma is heaven for making world-class Pinot Noir. It’s far enough inland to get the right heat for ripening the grapes, but close enough to the coast for afternoon breezes to blow in from the ocean which cools them right down again.It’s this swing in temperature that Pinot needs to ripen fully and taste amazing.Matt sources his grapes from a sustainably farmed vineyard on the sun-kissed Eastern bench of the valley. He tells me it’s prized fruit and there’s a waiting list for it - he daren’t lose it because there’s no way of getting it back!Then in the winery he employs every winemaking tactic from his 20 year career for the wine to reach its potential. He ferments 20% whole cluster at the bottom of the tank, which gives it a spicy, earthy note. The fermentation takes 4-5 days to get going naturally, which builds more complexity into the wine.He ages the wine on its lees for 18 months in barrel, 20-30% of which is new.You land up with a stunning Pinot with Californian sunshine and Burgundian elegance. Cool climate Syrah in Northern California?Bennett Valley is the smallest appellation in Sonoma, so it’s no wonder I hadn’t heard of it before.It’s a hilly, rocky region, with strong winds and dense fog which come in every day and cool the grapes right down. The vines are quite stressed out, and produce dark, inky flavours in the fruit - when handled correctly. And you also get a lovely cracked black pepper character which is the signature of good Bennett Valley Syrah. This is the first wine Matt made in 2003 under the Baldassari label, so he’s been tweaking and making improvements to it ever since.If you like northern Rhone Syrah with a broad, meaty, savoury edge, this wine is for you.I just love discovering this kind of wine, so please try it and let me know what you think! It’s the most famous sub-appellation of the region, and because of its higher altitude, it’s known for its longevity, elegance and style.Federico makes this wine at Fattoria Lavacchio - a gorgeous, historic winery in the heart of Rufina. They’re one of the organic pioneers of the region, and the healthiness of the vineyards and fruit shines in their wines.Federico’s been working with them since 2008, helping them realise the potential of their amazing raw material. This wine is a nod to how great Chianti used to be made. Federico takes fruit from their oldest vineyards, and gently ferments the juice using spontaneous fermentation from wild yeasts. He then ages the wine in special large oak casks from the nearby Langhe region - this gives the wine a special minerality and spiciness.You end up with a rich, refined and complex red, with the classic Tuscan woody and violet notes. - [Pretium Rioja Tinto 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/pretium-rioja-tinto-2018): This wine is from Berta’s most special vineyard. It’s the reason she left a successful engineering career to go back to the family vines and make wine. And it isn’t any old vineyard - it’s really old. Planted by Berta’s great-grandfather in 1901. It’s in the furthest, most northwestern corner of Rioja. It’s a wild, remote place, with unpredictable weather and harsh conditions. According to the journalist Ferran Centelles, this could be the most extreme place in the world for growing Tempranillo. Berta tells me the only way to grow good fruit around here is from low-yielding, old vines. They produce fruit with unrivalled concentration and complexity. This Tempranillo is unlike anything I’ve tasted from Rioja before. Inky-dark purple in colour, full of lush and juicy blackberries, a savoury edge, and gorgeous florals from the 5% of Grenache, Graciano and Viura in the blend. You can taste the power and intensity from those incredible old vines in every sip. I first discovered Berta’s wines when I was at the big Barcelona wine fair in April. It was planted en masse in the Maule Valley in the 1940s after the devastating earthquake of 1939 - in an effort to rejuvenate the region, and bulk up the local reds.But it was only as recently as 2010 that winemakers started rediscovering the incredible potential of these precious old vines.If you ever visit the Maule Valley, it’s hard not to fall in love with the place. Wild, empty landscapes, a patchwork of ancient vineyards, and winding roads dotted with small cottages and shacks. It’s like going back in time.I’m a total sucker for old vine Carignan - the bright blueberry, violets and wild herbs on the nose, the juicy and intense palate, with a freshness and drinkability which keeps you coming back for more.I was introduced to Natalia and Maria José’s Carignan from another winemaker, Connie Schwaderer, who put on a huge tasting for me of talented, unsung Chilean producers.It’s from a 75 year-old vineyard on gentle slopes near Cauqenes, based on granite soils and farmed with organic principles.The old vines produce tiny amounts of fruit here - just 1 bottle per vine - but what it does produce is full of concentration and character.I knew I wanted an old vine Carignan to introduce Irish wine drinkers to, and this one stood head and shoulders above the rest.And it’s at a price I can scarcely believe for the quality. For another delicious red from the same estate, try the Casa Bauzá Atrevido 2018. Nowhere else does the Carménère grape like Chile, and it’s high time more people got to know this delicious grape. It’s from the northern part of Chile’s most prestigious wine region, the Maipo Valley. This area, called Til-Til, is too hot to make most red grapes. Summer days get up to 35-36 degrees. But the nights drop by 20 degrees, and Carménère loves this climate. Presumido is the star in Casa Bauza’s portfolio. It’s exactly this standard of wine that earned Bauzá's winemaker, Natalia Poblete, Chile’s Young Winemaker of the Year in 2018. She picks the grapes a month earlier than everyone else, to avoid over-ripeness in the wine. And instead of bludgeoning it with new oak, she gently ages it with a mixture of 3rd-5th use French and American oak, as well as old Italian casks and concrete eggs. You end up with a smooth, elegant and refined red that the locals go nuts for - only a tiny amount of this is exported outside of the country. So consider yourself lucky to try an authentic, premium Carménère made by a supremely talented winemaker. - [Gindorf Zellerberg Riesling Auslese 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/gindorf-annaberg-riesling-auslese-2018): This is a late-harvest sweet wine, only made in the best years. It’s from Laura’s Zellerberg vineyard in the Mosel, which is set on steep grey slate - which gives a lovely minerality to the wine. 2018 was one of those perfect years, when they got just the right balance of sun and rain to produce grapes with the perfect amount of sugar in them to produce an Auslese. And Laura’s still waiting for that perfect year to strike again - she hasn’t made this wine since then! Every wine country seems to have a region that is finally fulfilling its potential, after years of neglect, thanks to a handful of committed, and slightly mad winemakers. Sicily, Beaujolais, as well as Swartland in South Africa and Cebreros in Spain all spring to mind. Itata is that very place in Chile. It's a cool-climate region to the very south of Chile's wine producing area, and home to some of the oldest vineyards in the world. Back in 2002, Enzo's parents, a doctor and a nurse, threw their life savings into buying their dream property in Itata, nestled in the foothills of the Andes. It's called Santa Inés, and at the time it was surrounded by dry-farmed Chardonnay and Pais vineyards. For years they sold their grapes for peanuts to big wine companies. They had one particular vineyard, called Los Patricios, which was set on an elevated slope and on a mixture of granite and volcanic soils. One day a truck driver told them that the grapes from this vineyard were always put aside when they reached the winery, and given special treatment. So they brought in François Massoc, Burgundy-trained and one of Chile's top winemakers, to see how special these grapes really were. Los Patricios Chardonnay was born, and a Decanter trophy for the best Chilean Chardonnay in 2012 proved they were indeed onto something spectacular. And then the same award two years later proved it was no fluke! One sniff of this wine and you know you're onto something seriously fine - it's flinty, toasty and honeyed. And in the mouth - it's broad, citrusy and rich, with a weighty mid-palate and long, complex nutty finish. This ranks consistently in the top 3 to 5 Chardonnays in South America over the past decade, and it's easy to see why. It’s a pretty explosive blend of Carignan, Garnacha, Cab Sauv and Syrah, but it’s smooth and approachable at the same time. Marc named this wine D’Iatra after his 11 year-old son Artai, spelt backwards. If you look at the label you’ll see Artai dreaming about touching the stars and the moon. There’s a bit of Petit Prince and Jack and the Beanstalk in there, a mix of dreams and fairytales. Priorat is a high and hot region just two hours from Barcelona, and everything grown here is so intense in flavour. Not just grapes for the wines - but the olives, vegetables and herbs all taste insane. So the wines from here are pretty full on, but they have a lovely freshness from the altitude that makes them incredibly elegant and drinkable. Priorat can be a bit of a beast when drunk young. But thankfully for you, Marc has aged this 6 years for you so it’s drinking perfectly right now. - [Cal Batllet Gratallops 5 Partides Priorat 2016](https://winespark.co.uk/products/cal-batllet-gratallops-5-partides-priorat-2016): Priorat is probably the greatest place in the world for the Carignan grape. And one of the best examples is this wine, made from 100% Carignan from Marc’s grandfather’s 100+ year old vines. Wine magazine Decanter agree, in a recent expert tasting declaring it the joint 2nd best Carignan in Spain. The work in the vineyard here is intense - steep slopes, all manual, back-breaking work, all for a piddly 1 ton yield per hectare. But the wine is worth it, as is the honour of working with these treasures of old vineyards. And to respect the generations who have worked the land before us. The nose is incredible, you could just sniff it all day. It’s loaded with herbs, ripe fruit and white pepper. Then the taste in the mouth is incredible - juicy, full, smooth with layers of sweet black fruit, liquorice, violets and soft oak. Because Marc is a small producer rather than a big established name, you’re getting amazing value here for one of Priorat’s best wines. - [Château Maris Les Amandiers Minervois La Livinière 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/chateau-maris-les-amandiers-minervois-la-liviniere-2018): This wine shows how truly great wine from Languedoc can be - if you give it the chance to shine. It’s from Château Maris in La Livinière - one of the Languedoc’s best wineries producing rich reds in one of the Languedoc’s best areas. Ben Darnault of Mas Calamiac fame is the head winemaker here - everything he touches seems to turn to (liquid) gold. The reason this wine is so good, is that absolutely zero expense is spared in the making of it. It’s from the oldest Syrah vineyard at Château Maris, which is totally organic, biodynamic and dry-grown. The immaculate fruit is hand-picked in the vineyard and then each berry is painstakingly hand-removed from the stems in the winery. The whole process takes two days and ten people! But Ben tells me this meticulous work is completely worth it - it produces the perfect ferment and as a winemaker there’s very little he needs to do with it. The wine spends 18-24 months in new French oak and then finishes its ageing in concrete eggs. You end up with a wine with incredible intensity and gorgeous bright aromatics, but it’s also so easy to drink - which is how you know that Ben Darnault has had his hands on it. If you love a good Côte-Rôtie, but don’t love shelling out €100+ for it, then you’ll be in heaven with this wine. - [L'Eclat de Valentin Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/leclat-de-valentin-saint-emilion-grand-cru-2018): Frédéric makes 30 barrels in total of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. For this wine, L'Eclat, he takes his top 10 barrels which come from older vines, which are over 60 years old. The barrels are mostly new oak, and the wine is aged in them for 18 months before bottling. The blend is 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Franc - you get a dark, rich and savoury nose, and a structured, broad and juicy palate. There’s lovely bright aromatics from the Cab Franc - but this is a serious Bordeaux. This is your chance to taste a top Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from a great vintage, which is drinking well now and will continue to age if you want to lay it down. Due to limited stock, there's a limit of 2 bottles per order on this wine. - [Stepp 'S' Beerenauslese 2022](https://winespark.co.uk/products/stepp-beerenauslese-s-2022): If you’re one of those people (like me!) who loves something sweet at the end of a big meal, then you’ve come to the right place. Beerenauslese means ‘berry selection’. The process to make this wine is painstakingly manual, but the results are spectacular and totally worthwhile. Gerd waits until later in the season to pick the grapes, when they’ve started to dry and shrivel on the vine. The grapes at this stage are delightfully sweet - there’s now a higher percentage of sugar versus water in them. This process is called ‘botrytis’ or noble rot. Everything is hand-picked from the vine and then hand-sorted again in the winery - to make sure only the most perfectly rotten grapes make it through. The wine then ferments slowly and naturally, and you end up with a fresh, rich and ripe sweet wine, with an exotic and tropical twist. A further few years’ ageing in bottle means some lovely nutty and marzipan flavours have developed. It’s sweet-but-not-too-sweet, and will compliment any dessert or cheeseboard at the end of a great meal. To be able to label your wine as Penedès, your grapes must be organic, and you must age the wine for a minimum of 15 months on its lees. The idea being that whenever you buy Penedès sparkling wine, you can pretty much be guaranteed a high quality of fizz. And this is one of the best sparkling wines in all of Spain, from Eva Ventura of Mas Bertran, who also makes our wildly popular Balma Brut Nature. And she has the has the medal to prove it - it’s her most awarded wine. The grape is 100% Xarel·lo, which is the grape behind Spain’s best fizz. It’s from a special 60 year-old single vineyard, Eva’s best one, based on clay soils. This is an incredibly special bottle - it’s from the 2013 vintage, but still tastes so fresh, creamy and pure. The value here is incredible for such quality inputs and age. If you ever wanted to try how great Spanish sparkling wine can be, this is the one that you have to try. - [Cordero Innav Arneis 2022](https://winespark.co.uk/products/cordero-innav-arneis-2022): When I asked Serena for samples of her big Italian reds, what I didn't expect to turn up was this absolute gem of a white. It’s from the little known Roero region which is right beside the far more famous Langhe. Langhe looks like a postcard - rolling hills, imposing wineries, immaculate vineyards. Roero in comparison is more mountainous, wild and biodiverse, dotted with pockets of tiny vineyards. Serena tells me the people are a bit wilder too! Serena’s brother Gabriele is the quiet hero behind this wine. He looks after the grape-growing and is at peak happiness tending the vines and surrounded by the bees, bugs and butterflies that thrive in this vineyard. The name Innav is a dedication to their late grandfather Vanni, and if you look closely at the label you'll see Gabriele as a little boy picking grapes with him like they used to. This is a super refreshing white wine - it’s floral, peachy, and has loads of pear and apple flavours going on too. - [Gindorf Annaberg Riesling Schräglage 2021](https://winespark.co.uk/products/gindorf-annaberg-riesling-schraglage-2021): If you’re looking for the truest expression of Riesling in the world - you’ve come to the right place. Mosel Riesling is famed for its ‘minerality’ - the stony, flinty character that makes it so distinctive. The best soil for this is red slate - which the Annaberg vineyard behind this wine sits on. I was looking for a good Mosel Riesling and Gerd Stepp tipped me off on an old friend - Laura’s dad Gunter. Making wine isn’t for the faint-hearted around here - no machine could get near the 45-degree plus angled slopes. So everything is done by hand. And you can taste this care and attention in Laura’s wines. Look at the label and you’ll see a steep gold line streaking through it - this is the actual steepness of the slopes of the vineyard! This steep aspect gives the grapes perfect exposure to the sun to ripen fully, while the slate soils keep them cool and fresh at night. The wine itself is fresh and citrusy on the nose, and on the palate it’s soft, pure and elegant. It’s perfectly balanced with a long mineral finish - the flavour and complexity belies its mere 11% alcohol. This will age nicely for years. - [Pretium Rioja Blanco 2019](https://winespark.co.uk/products/pretium-rioja-blanco-2019): One of the sneaky big sellers of the first year of WineSpark was white Rioja. So I was overjoyed when I came across this gem at the Barcelona wine fair.It’s made by the extremely talented Berta Valgañon, in the far northwest corner of Rioja. This is a wild and remote place - with unpredictable weather. In August it gets as low as 2°C at night, with extremely hot days. This variation in day/night temperature gives the grapes a real intensity of flavour and freshness. Berta hand-picks the grapes from a single vineyard plot, planted by her great-grandfather 120 years ago. It’s a field blend of 45% Viura, 45% Malvasia and 10% Calagraño. It’s aged in old oak barrels for 11 months, 6 of which is on its lees. The wine ends up distinctly fresh and fruity, with a lovely subtle smoky and nutty nose from the oak. On the palate it’s full and intense, with a satisfyingly long saline finish. If you love white Burgundy but you’re after something a bit different, give this a try. And 93 points from Tim Atkin MW - high praise indeed. - [Domaine de la Sarazinière Mâcon Bussières Rouge 2022](https://winespark.co.uk/products/domaine-de-la-saraziniere-macon-bussieres-rouge-2021): When I first met Thibaud Baudin in Beaujolais back in January, he told me of a friend up in Macon doing ‘amazing things’ with Gamay and Chardonnay. This was exactly what customers wanted more of at the time, so I shuffled around my itinerary to make sure I could see Guillaume for myself. And I’m so glad I did - and I managed to come away with a small order of his best wines. It’s who you know and all that... This is Guillaume’s top red, made from a special old vineyard that his grandfather planted in 1926. The vineyard is based on the limestone soils you’d more often find in Burgundy, than the granite you mostly find in Beaujolais. The wine is made in a Burgundian style, with open-top fermentation and aged for 17 months in neutral oak barrels. Like with all Macon, there’s plenty of weight and intensity, but there’s a lovely elegance and charm about this wine too. Due to a few tough vintages in a row around here, there isn’t much white Burgundy available. So snap up a couple of bottles while you still can. - [Domaine de la Sarazinière Pouilly Fuissé Premier Cru Vers Gras 2020](https://winespark.co.uk/products/domaine-de-la-saraziniere-pouilly-fuisse-premier-cru-vers-gras-2020): Just 20 minutes from Thibaud Baudin’s winery in Juliénas, is his best friend Guillaume Trebignaud. He runs Domaine de la Sarazinière along with his parents in the southern end of the Mâconnais appellation. Here you’ll find Pouilly Fuissé - Mâcon's jewel in the crown, and probably the best value white wine in all of Burgundy. Ancient scholars used to liken it to Meursault and Montrachet - and who am I to argue?! Thibaud clearly has excellent taste in friends - because Guillaume’s Gamay and Chardonnay blew me away. And with the latest shipment I managed to secure a tiny amount of their ultra-rare top wine - the Premier Cru Vers Gras. It’s a beautifully rich and complex Chardonnay, with layers of toast, hazelnuts and a lovely creaminess. On the palate it’s rich, round and intense, with a long finish. The price is a snip for great Premier Cru Burgundy in Ireland - so grab a bottle and indulge! - [La Manufacture Chablis Premier Cru Forêts 2021](https://winespark.co.uk/products/la-manufacture-chablis-premier-cru-forets-2021): Ben’s goal with his La Manufacture label is to show the incredibly varied and nuanced areas that Chablis has to offer. You see, most Chablis ends up in one big samey blend, because people just want the word Chablis on the label. One such special place is Forêts, which is a ‘climat’ of the better-known Montmains Premier Cru. With Forêts’ south- and east-facing slopes, you get quite a ripe style of Chardonnay from all the sunshine. So Ben picks the grapes slightly early to retain freshness and elegance. You might know that the hallowed soil is what makes Chablis taste so good. The soil in Forêts is no different - the vineyard sits on Kimmeridgian limestone, with lots of clay and fossils that give the wine its classic flinty characteristic. You could easily compare it to the nearby Grand Cru Blanchot. Benjamin then adds complexity through ageing in one-third oak barrels, one-third stainless steel, and one-stail big oak casks. It’s a masterful example of elegant and complex Burgundian Chardonnay, from a brilliant vintage at a great price. Due to low stocks, there's a limit of two bottles per customer on this wine. - [Franck Massard Arbequina Olive Oil](https://winespark.co.uk/products/franck-massard-arbequina-olive-oil): This is what the locals call oli del raig in Catalan, which is the treasured first press of the olive harvest. Olives for more commercial oils are picked much later, when the olives are softer and easier to extract the oil. But this is a hand-picked, hand-made artisanal product made by a good friend of mine, Franck Massard, in the Montsant region. An early pick like this means the olives are harder, so you get less oil but the taste is much fresher and more aromatic. The olive here is Arbequina, a small, rustic olive typical to south Catalonia. It’s green, fresh and has a lovely sweetness to it, which balances out its gentle spiciness. It’s bottled unfiltered to maximise all those amazing nutty and spicy flavours, which means it might get a bit cloudy towards the end. But don't worry, you know it’s all good stuff! Use it in everything - for cooking with, for serving with nibbles, for dressing salads, for drizzling on your morning eggs… just make sure you always have a bottle on hand. This oil comes in a 500ml tin! - [La Mateo Rioja Reserva Privada 2018](https://winespark.co.uk/products/la-mateo-rioja-reserva-privada-2018): This wine is made from three old Tempranillo, Garnacha and Mazuela parcels in Rioja Baja. Including some of the highest Garnacha vineyards in all of Rioja. They are small plots, low yielding and totally uncommercial. But every winemaker likes to show off their best fruit and this is one of those wines for Mateo. It’s dark and powerful from the Tempranillo… the Garnacha really brings out a lush sweet strawberry fruit character, and 18 months in French oak gives it structure and silky-smoothness. To get the best out of this wine, Mateo recommends decanting for 45 minutes before serving. Or grab your biggest wine glasses and enjoy every moment. - [Banzao Bierzo Almorelle 2020](https://winespark.co.uk/products/banzao-almorelle-vino-de-paraje-2020): Last year I flew over to Spain to hunt down the perfect Mencía. And as always, I checked in with my contacts beforehand to give me the lay of the land. Two friends, whose palates I have the highest respect for, recommended a rising star of Bierzo, Silvia Marrao. And this is her top wine. It comes from a remote village called San Pedro de Olleros, high up in the Los Ancares mountains. It’s in the middle of a beautiful UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and it’s cooler and fresher up here than down in the main Bierzo valley. It means the grapes are incredibly vibrant and healthy, and you can see this shine through in the wine. Get ready for an incredible wine experience with this wine. A complex, savoury and perfumed nose leads to a dense and creamy palate, with violets, sweet dark fruit and savoury notes. This is amazing quality - such elegant, intense and persistent flavours. It reminds me of a top Côte de Nuits Burgundy and deserves to sit right in that category. Silvia is a one-woman band, doing everything by hand and by herself. And I’m so happy I’ve discovered this wine for you. But not all Bierzo is made equally. This wine is from a remote village called San Pedro de Olleros, high up in the Los Ancares mountains. It’s in the middle of a beautiful UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and it’s cooler and fresher up here than down in the main Bierzo valley. It means the grapes are incredibly vibrant and healthy, and you can see this shine through in the wine. This Godello has a creamy and complex nose, with stunning honeyed and floral flavours. On the palate it's gentle, soft and silky, with incredible length and purity. It reminds me of a great aged Riesling! The altitude of the vineyards around the imposing Mont Ventoux, as well as the Mistral wind which blows through in the summer, keeps the grapes around here healthy and gives them a lovely balance and freshness. It's literally a breath of fresh air! Winemaker Corinna Faravel, seeing this potential over twenty years ago, made the brave move from Germany to buy her own vineyards here in 2001. This is her flagship wine - made up of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre from her beautiful, organically-farmed estate. She does everything in the vineyards to pick perfectly healthy and ripe grapes, and the winemaking is pretty simple from there. The wine is aged in concrete tanks and bottled with a tiny bit of sulphur to preserve all that vineyard character. If you love Côtes du Rhône but maybe you miss how it used to taste - this wine is for you. It's bright, fresh and juicy, with lovely flavours of raspberry, violets and spice. Corinna sold her wine very briefly in Ireland around 10 years ago - she couldn’t be happier to be back, and I’m delighted to make it happen! - [Maite Sánchez Madrid 6-pack](https://winespark.co.uk/products/maites-magical-madrid-6-pack): Every time I taste with winemaker Maite Sánchez, I just get more and more impressed. So the last time I was over there, I couldn’t help but add two new wines to our range - the Decanter-lauded Suerte Albillo Real, and El Bufón Garnacha, a beautifully perfumed and powerful single-vineyard red from high up in the Gredos mountains. With the upcoming long weekend in mind, I’ve put a 6-pack of Maite’s wines together for you to try. In the case you’ll get: 2x La Suerte de Arrayán Garnacha 2018 - one of our most popular reds so far this year, and I’ll leave the rest to John Wilson in The Irish Times: ‘A beguiling wine that combines soft silky strawberry fruits with an underlying power. Think Burgundy meets Barolo and you’re getting close 1x El Bufón de Arrayán Albillo Real 2023 - a golden, citrusy and full-bodied white with hints of honey and tropical flavours, and a distinct minerality from the more granite soils in the vineyard. These are all from old vines, farmed organically, and made in an artisanal style by a talented winemaker at the top of her game. And because they’re from the dead centre of Spain and not somewhere more famous, the value for money here is off the charts! - [La Mateo Rioja Tempranillo Vendimia 2021](https://winespark.co.uk/products/la-mateo-rioja-tempranillo-vendimia-2021): Mateo Ruiz is a quiet guy, but he comes alive when talking about his super-premium La Mateo range. He takes the top 5% of his grapes, and uses up 50% of his resources on them. Which means he takes his best grapes from his best vineyards, allocates his best oak barrels, and gives them all the time they need to age to perfection. It’s from an underrated sub-region of Rioja called Rioja Baja. Because of the higher altitude, 50-year old vines, and limestone-clay soils here, it’s just another level of Rioja than what you might normally be able to get your hands on. Look out for Mateo’s grandfather, father and uncle on the label - this wine is a tribute to his family who spent decades toiling in the fields growing grapes for the family business. - [Mélanie Pfister Engelberg Grand Cru Riesling 2021](https://winespark.co.uk/products/melanie-pfister-engelberg-grand-cru-riesling-2021): Engelberg means ‘Angel’s Hill’ and it’s an apt name for such a special vineyard.It’s south-facing and based on soft yellow limestone soils, where the roots can grow deep and therefore produce grapes of great finesse and complexity. Mélanie tells me 2015 was quite a warm vintage. But given they’re in the northern part of Alsace, which is cooler and more exposed than the rest of the region, the wines have ended up nicely mature and ripe, but with great balance.The nose here is amazing - I get candied lemons, pomegranate, limey-mineral flavours… all sorts. On the palate it’s balanced, persistent, smoky and juicy - with a long long finish. Powerful stuff.Make sure you pay special attention to this wine when you enjoy it - it’s really worth savouring. - [Mélanie Pfister Macération Gewurztraminer 2022](https://winespark.co.uk/products/melanie-pfister-maceration-gewurztraminer-2022): Orange wine is basically a white wine made in a red wine style. It’s very trendy and hip these days, but so often the wine fails to deliver. Until you try a wine like this. Gewurztraminer is best known for making sweeter wines, but it turns out that its naturally orange-pink colour and powerful aromas make it the perfect grape to make delicious orange wine. The grapes are hand-picked and then the skins are left in contact with the juice for 10 days, to increase colour and texture. The wine is then aged for almost a year in a mixture of oak barrels, steel tanks and clay pots. You get so much flavour on the nose - lychee, roses and exotic spices. The palate then is dry, balanced and pure, with a lovely long finish. This wine will go great with all sorts of food, but especially with nibbles such as cured meats and mature cheese like aged Comté. - [Tim Smith's Barossa 6-pack](https://winespark.co.uk/products/tim-smiths-barossa-6-pack): Tim Smith is one of the Barossa’s best winemakers. He's been making wine here for 35 years, for some of the biggest names including Yalumba, Chateau Tanunda and St Hallett. He was named Barossa’s Winemaker of the Year in 2019, and won the IWSC trophy for the best Shiraz in the world in 2010. Tim tells me the secret to this wines is his access to great fruit. For decades he’s worked with the region’s best family growers, doing business on a handshake in the pub on a Friday night. In the pack you’ll get six delicious Barossa wines at a price I can barely believe myself: 2x Bugalugs Shiraz 2022 - a classic Aussie Shiraz - ripe, bold and powerful, with plenty of sweet dark fruit and a savoury edge. It’s brilliant value because he declassifies fruit from his top wines into this blend. I’m reliably told Bugalugs is an Aussie term of endearment (if you can confirm, please do) 2x Barossa Shiraz 2021 - like many of the truly great Australian wines, this is a blend of multiple vineyards, located in the Barossa and Eden Valley. Each vineyard adds something unique to the blend, and their ages range from 30 to 145 years old! It’s matured in French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered - preserving all the amazing flavours and textures from the fruit 2x Eden Valley Riesling 2022 - think of this as your palate cleanser after those rich reds… it’s from a precious 100 year-old single vineyard, and with older vines you get great complexity and concentration in the grapes. It’s dry, refreshing and punchy - a perfect post-work quaffer (I speak from experience here) - [Banzao Bierzo Mencía 2021](https://winespark.co.uk/products/banzao-bierzo-mencia-2021): When it comes to fine wine in Spain, Bierzo is a region on the rise. Due to very low stock there's a limit of two bottles per customer on this wine. - [Silius Ferro Godello 2022](https://winespark.co.uk/products/silius-ferro-godello-2022): I first tried winemaker Ana Gadín’s wines at a tasting last year in La Coruña, and this Godello blew me away. ‘Ferro’ means iron - the wine is named after an ancient Roman iron mine right next to Ana’s Godello vineyard in Ribeira Sacra. Which is not just a nice story… the soils here are red and full of iron, and this gives a real steeliness and intensity to the wine.
